Tales From The Dark Tower Volume 1 Joseph Vargo Christine Filipak Joseph Iorillo Books

"This world in made of stories, to its core. And because the world is made of stories, you must be very cautious which tales you believe, which ones you tell and which ones you listen to. The right story, or the wrong one, can change you forever." Russell Novotny co-author

Vargo's History of Splendid, Dark Design:With that quote, a reader should expect a set of well designed, interconnected tales, and the anthology Tales from the Dark Tower delivers. Illustrated and co-authored by Joseph Vargo, this extends to Vargo's media empire (the illustration portion shared with co-author Christine Filipak who form "Monolithic Graphics" ... makers of spooky calendars and The Gothic Tarot, and the music brand "Nox Arcana" discussed below). This book was inspired by James Pipik (another coauthor) who proposed connecting Joseph's art with a string of stories. Vargo agreed. In all there are eight collaborating authors (six from Ohio) teaming up to deliver thirteen ghost tale/adventures.

Connecting all these tales is the titular Dark Tower looming over the town of Vasaria. Prepare to venture with: ghosts, crusaders, succubi, vampires, gargoyles, and humans (both pitiful and honorable). Each successive story builds on the previous to unveil a rich history of a truly wondrous, dark place. The underlying story-arc is so well designed, the "voice" of the stories seems the same (despite the variety of authors). Some read as classic ghost stories; some as fairy tales; some as high-octane Sword & Sorcery. All are aimed at chipping away at the fantastic mystery of the Tower.

More Dark Tower: You'll be left satisfied about Lord Brom's (main character) inclusion into the Dark Tower, and still you will want more! Thankfully, there is an illustrated sequel : Beyond The Dark Tower.

But wait...there is even more! A Dark Tower Soundtrack: Vargo's music talents fuel Nox Arcana Music, which has decades of experience producing Movie Soundtracks and Concept albums saluting all things weird (Edgar Allen Poe, Lovecraft, Zombies, Haunted Houses, Spooky Carnivals, Bram Stoker's Dracula, etc.). Many horror and fantasy writers listen to his work as they create. One may expect a Dark Tower album, and there is! The music album has 19 tracks, most with names corresponding to the chapter titles.

Tales From The Dark Tower Volume 1 Joseph Vargo Christine Filipak Joseph Iorillo Books Reviews

I bought this thinking the stories would be great, but I was more interested in the artwork. The stories are just okay.
Absolutely love! This Book of Darkness!!!!
One of the best most well written books I have read in a long time. Wish there were more books.
I bought this copy to replace a hardbound edition i had owned that was signed by joseph vargo. Unfortunately in 2006 while i lived in florida, that edition was ruined due to a hurricane and i wanted another copy to at least have. After re-reading it once again i can truely say that this book is a definitive work of art and is a exemplary show of artistic talent.
I loved all the different intertwining stories in this book, it sucked me right in! I am on the second book now.
Just when I was about to give up everything that possibly has to do with vampires with the exception of Dracula, I am Legend and a few short stories (Because Bram Stoker's classic novel, Richard Matheson's terrific book and some few selected short stories are the only thing regarding the theme that doesn't seem to suck, sorry about my bad choice of words here) this beautiful collection of tales comes in. I recommend it to everyone looking for fairly good vampire literature and gothic literature fans as well. This collection also features some tragic, bittersweet ghost tales.
As a near sixteen year old fan of Joseph Vargo (being a fan since I saw his Gothic Tarot deck online when I was eleven), nothing still ceases to amaze me when it comes to this modern master of the macabre who I compare to Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker. Does this man's talent know no bounds?

Anyway... This book was amazing! It revolves around the ominous structure of the Dark Tower whose shadow looms heavily over an Eastern European village known as Vasaria. The atmosphere created by the words of the various authors (including Joseph Vargo, Christine Filipak, Joseph Iorillo, James Pipik, Robert Michaels, and more) and Mr. Vargo's artwork is very palpable and it makes one immerse themselves into the world that is created within this book. My favorite stories were the tale of the sinister Dark Tower, the darkly romantic Vampire's Kiss, the rebellious Masque of Sorrow, the serene and reflective Sanctuary, the retribution of Vesper Tolls and Noctem Aeternus, and Lilith.

This book is highly recommended to people who love and want to immerse themselves the dark atmosphere of Gothic literature once created by Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker in the nineteenth century. However, those who are squeamish when it comes to excessive gore and violence, grow a stronger stomach and read this thing already! In the immortal words of the character The Baron in the book,

"Man hath needed no magic to compel him toward darkness. He doth seek it willingly enough on his own..."
