The 100 A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History Michael H Hart 9780806513508 Books

This book is a wonderful compendium of people who were the the greatest influences on our world. Unfortunately, time has made it somewhat out of date, since the pace of technology has been exponential and it's impossible to judge the impact of many of our greatest scientists and leaders. Nonetheless, it's still interesting to wonder who is number 7 and why he's more important than number 8. One might not always agree with Mr. Hart, but it's always interesting to read his justifications for the rankings he makes. I bought this copy for my granddaughter, since my copy is worn out. This is a great source of cultural literacy for everyone.

The 100 A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History Michael H Hart 9780806513508 Books Reviews

The 100 has been a life-changing book for me. It has "unlocked" history for me - allowed me to relate to it and retain information - like no other book I've read.

The book is entirely evaluative. It consists of very short chapters, each about one of these hundred figures. Each chapter discusses the person's life, and why Hart has ranked him or her as more or less important than the others. The criteria he seems to use are

* How greatly did this person influence the world, especially our everyday lives?

* Would progress have happened without this person? When or how would it have been likely to happen without this person's accomplishment?

* Did this person do it alone, or with the help of others?

Hart has an amazing overview of world history, and his perspective is often different from the norm, or certainly from what is presented in textbooks. Each person I read about, I've read about elsewhere; but Hart consistently pulls together the information in a way that makes it finally make sense to me. He dispels many common myths about world history along the way.

I wish Michael Hart would write another book about his second 100 most influential people!!
One of the 5 best non-fiction books I've ever read (and I have a library of about 3500 books).
This book had a great influence on me and I bought it for my daughter 35 years later. It's still in print. It is a survey of history made personal, covering all fields of human endeavor and all periods. It deals with people and events that one might never encounter in school or the press, but which are, nevertheless, vital to understanding civilization.
This book gives you a good synopsis of historical figures. However, I think lack some research and biased in terms of it's speaking for many historical personalities. There could be more work done before publishing and writing about so much influential personalities of the past.
In Summary Intelligent analysis by well informed authors.

This book should be read by all humans, regardless of their race, religion, geographic location, culture, etc. It should be required reading for all students, because it will teach them what many people don't know or never learn.

These authors looked at people with honesty, and without prejudice. They looked at how these people affected all aspects of human development; including law and order, finance, history, philosophy, war, social behavior, society, justice, equality, welfare, ethics, and many other areas. They documented how the selected people affected the lives of others not only in their life time, but for all times to come. Their analysis also included scientific achievements, but it was not the ONLY factor, as many others writers have done in their books.

Great Job! You should have received a Nobel Price for this!!! You have my vote!!!
I really enjoyed reading The 100 a Ranking of the Most Influential Persons In History. It talks about a lot of my favorite historical figures like Peter the Great. Peter the Great was arguably the greatest ruler of Russia. But not many people know a lot about him, he really put Russia on to the world stage. This book also taught me about Edward de Vere also known as William Shakespeare, I really enjoyed this book because it taught me that William wasn’t really his name. Overall this is an amazing book that everyone should read.
This is an excellent book if you want to deepen your knowledge of history, if you want to refresh what you already learned in school or wish to get acquinted with lesser knowned but still highly important people in the history of mankind. And so, the book is in fact a collection of short bios of the author's list of the most influencial persons in history. Michael Hart made historical Giants like Confucius, Aristolde or Alexander the Great seems more vivid and genuine to me.

Some people really stands out in terms of achievements such as Louis Pasteur, and you'll wonder why men like Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill have been left out.
The fun really is to mentally argue with the author, which I must admit is what makes the effort of going through the book valuable. I'm not giving 5 stars to the book mainly because some bios where rather stark or too technical for me, even if Hart made a nice effort to render it all in comprehensible form.
This book is a wonderful compendium of people who were the the greatest influences on our world. Unfortunately, time has made it somewhat out of date, since the pace of technology has been exponential and it's impossible to judge the impact of many of our greatest scientists and leaders.
