Spiral X started as a charity buy. I've known the author a long time, and was willing to support his virgin endeavor into the field of self book publishing without ever intending to read it. Not a fan of vampire books, I guess. However, out of curiosity more than anything, I opened up the book, and was immediatelyl sucked in. Wow! Without giving too much away, I have to say I was SOOO impressed I have bought a couple of extra copies for friends of mine, who also loved the book. I read the other reviews, and to those who thought it was a little too packaged and predictable, I point out that some of the most successful popular books and movies got those same comments and the public didn't care. Entertainment is entertainment, and in these days of economic and mental struggle, soometimes all you want is to be taken out of where you are to someplace else, any place else, where you can beat up the evil, and good triumphs at the end. What J.J. Westendarp has done was take the tried and true formulas and deftly twist them into an interesting and captivating read. For a few hours at least, I could forget my own personal struggles and troubles and follow Cheryl's story instead of my own. Good job, sir, good job!

I usually don't read books in this genre, but once I started reading Spiral X I couldn't put it down! The storyline is engaging and the characters are well developed. It's definitely not one of those cookie-cutter vampire stories. I would love to see a sequel.
I began this book as a recommendation from a friend. I can say now, after reading the book that yes, he still is a friend.
Spiral X is pretty outside of the normal genera that I would read and because of that, I admit that I may have been somewhat biast going in against it. I stand corrected. It started out a bit slow, as there was more to character and plot development then there was to pure action, but those that were there were described in enough detail to make you feel the excitment that the author was trying for. This lead me to continue to read and I am glad that I did.

Once the introductions were done, we hit the ground running.... and I mean running. The rest was a fast paced adventure in both fantasy and Sci Fi with wry humor tied in. The main character is nothing like you would expect with her own twists and scars and that doesn't even touch the half of what this book brought. I really have to say that I enjoyed this read and would recommend to friends. I think that you should to.

I am looking forward to the sequels as well as the short story that is available now.

I say give this one a chance, you may be as suprised as I was that it really caught hold and didn't let go.

Plast is the new Extasy but far more dangerous and deadly. it has found its way onto the Dallas metroplex. Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter out to get those involved in the drug's proliferation. with the help of her best friend Virgil, fellow Hunter Tank, FBI agent Fasano and the mysterious Hunter Rev, she fights the vampire Arthur and his minions and faces the demons that threaten to consume her life. if that isn't a handful, she needs to find out as well who ordered a contract out on her head.
J.J. Westendarp has written an interesting take on the vampire hunter story. his characters - the human ones - could be anyone in your neighborhood who go about their daily business. the difference is that when night falls, they take on the role of deadly crime fighters.
Cheryl, the main protagonist, tells the story in her point of view. despite the skills she exhibits as a Hunter, Cheryl is a vulnerable sensitive young woman facing trauma from the loss of those people closest to her. when she crosses the line for the first time, she is shocked at herself. she constantly struggles with her feelings but this only motivates her further to continue her fight against the Underworld. she later learns the answer to her question - if the end justifies the means.
at certain moments in the book, i initially found all this self-analyis cum emotional psychobabble distracting or cumbersome but i later realized that it was critical to Cheryl's growth as a person and her desire to be a Hunter. i advise readers then to be a little gentle with our heroine. to know Cheryl is to understand her from within and from without.
Spiral X is a paranormal thriller with a cast of hardened drug dealers, shady informants, evil vampire thugs, nosy cops and suave vampire hunters. the author has injected his novel with fight scenes, surprising twists and turns and a little bit of drama. overall, i enjoyed reading this book. it seems like a sequel may be in order and i look forward to one.
